Vocal Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has been arrested and taken to Nairobi for questioning.

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) allied member took to social pages on Thursday, 21st April to confirm his arrest.

“I have just been arrested and taken to Nairobi,” he wrote.

The reason for the arrest is yet to be established. Cherargei has been on the spot in the past over allegations of remarks bordering hate speech.

Last month Charargei was caught in dramatic scenes when he got into an exchange with a trial magistrate at the Milimani Law Courts.

Charargei had been arraigned on 29th March in a session overshadowed by his refusal to allow the court to cross-examine a witness without his lawyer present.

Cherargei requested a postponement because his lawyer was in another court.

The lawmaker said that police in court were intimidating him and refusing him access to his counsel.

“Why am I being intimidated? I thought courts are safe? They are even calling a police inspector! These are hostilities!” Cherargei called out.

Court Magistrate Wendy Michemi asked the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to investigate Cherargei for contempt of court after his disturbance in court.

His arrest comes barely a day after Nairobi County Assembly Speaker, Benson Mutura was arrested by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations over alleged theft.

Cherargei is likely to retain his Senate seat in the 9th August polls after winning the UDA party nominations on Thursday, 14th April.
