The National Assembly has Tuesday afternoon reconvened for the 6th and final session of the 12th Parliament.
While standing orders provides that regular sittings of the house should commence on the second Tuesday of February, the resumption comes two weeks earlier following the adoption of the calendar of the house for 2021.
Clerk of the National Assembly Michael Sialai says the early commencement is necessitated by the need to conclude pending House business.
Sialai said being an election year, House business is likely to be interrupted by election-related activities including the party primaries and the official campaigns which will involve Members of Parliament.
The House is this afternoon expected to approve the membership of the House Business Committee (HBC) as well as the reconstitution of sessional committees such as the Parliamentary powers and privileges Committee and the select committee on members’ service and facilities.
The HBC will then prepare the House calendar for the 6th session for consideration and approval by the House.
Top on the agenda for the National Assembly will be all elections-related legislative business, with the House awaiting the decision of the Senate on the Political Parties Amendment bill which was passed by Mps during a special sitting earlier in the month and referred to the Senate.
The National Assembly will also consider the Election Amendment bill 2022 as well as any regulations related to the elections as may be submitted by the IEBC or the Registrar of Political parties.
Other priority businesses include the nomination of persons to the Equalization Fund Board, approval of the appointment of persons to SRC representing the National Police Service which is currently before the Finance committee.
Other legislations include the Huduma Bill 2021, the Children bill 2021, The Public Procurement and Asset Disposal amendment bill 2021, The Coffee bill 2021 among others.
