Nyamira Women Rep raises alarm over rising defilement cases – KBC

Nyamira County Woman Representative Jerusha Momanyi has decried the rising incidents of defilement cases on vulnerable girls in the region.

Jerusha raised this concern while issuing tents to women groups at Kenyambi village, West Mugirango constituency.

The MP observed that of recent, vulnerable teenage girls have suffered in the hands of defilers, majority of whom get away without being arrested, a worrying trend which leaders must work together to contain.

“Our teenage girls have become so endangered and I’m worried that this high rate of defilement cases within our community is making our girls grow under a lot of fear and trauma for they are unsure of the intentions of boys around them and when they will execute their heinous plans,” Momanyi observed.

“The most recent unfortunate incident was on Thursday in Nyamira North Sub County where two minors, 11 and 15 years of age were repeatedly defiled by 4 bodaboda riders who allegedly lured them into a nearby joint in Nyaramba town, intoxicated them before the beastly act,” the MP said.

She revealed the awful act compelled her to travel to Nyamira North and consult with area administrators to ensure that the culprits are arrested and justice offered to the girls who are currently recuperating at Nyamira County Referral Hospital.

The MP urged the County Commissioner Amos Nyaribo to ensure that all the four men involved in the indecent act on the innocent girls are arrested and handed over to be arraigned before courts for justice to prevail.

“What are our men looking for in underage girls when we have many grown up women out here with whom they can consent and satisfy their sexual desires? Momanyi queried.

“These acts should stop if at all we desire to have a future generation that is decent, which respects and upholds our community values and culture that protects the girl child,” stated the legislature.

Jerusha further appealed to older men to take up the task of counseling the younger generation as it was the tradition to contain this behavior which is unbecoming and unacceptable in our community.

Nyamira County Commissioner, Amos Mariba confirmed that two of the four perpetrators had  already been arrested and are helping police pursue the other two and will be arraigned before Nyamira  Law courts.
