Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya is being investigated over his current multimillion investments.
Oparanya recently bought a hotel in Kisumu city centre at a cost of Sh400 million that was set to be auctioned. The hotel is owned by a prominent Kisumu politician.
Oparanya has also constructed apartments in Kakamega town next to National Housing Corporation estate. His residence for his second wife Carolyne Oparanya in Likuyani on 50-acres cost millions of shillings. When Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission visited Likuyani, Oparanya is said to have given documents showing he has taken a loan from a bank to develop the property.
Investigators suspect Oparanya has been receiving kickbacks from Asian contractors behind Bukhungu Stadium project that is being done in phase I and II totaling to Sh2.4 billion.

Also said to be bankrolling Oparanya’s private projects are Chinese contractors behind construction of multibillion Kakamega Referral Hospital.
It is estimated that Oparanya is now worth Sh15 billion both in liquid and investments. Also being investigated is the amount of money he used to construct his new residence in Butere that has a conference hall that can accommodate 500 people with a fully furnished restaurant.
Another contractor M-pig who was blacklisted by Bungoma County government has relocated to Kakamega county and is also bankrolling the governor’s private projects.
According to sources, most of Oparanya’s kickbacks come via firms operated by his aides and relatives. One scandal that is under investigations is Oparanya healthcare project that was allocated millions of shillings in county budget to offer healthcare to county residents but nothing is being felt on ground.
