Supporters of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) burst into song and dance to celebrate Rigathi Gachagua’s nomination as William Ruto’s deputy in the presidential election on August 9.
“We are delighted that Ruto has selected Gachagua,” one supporter, Martha Wanjiru, said. “This is a formidable team today, and I am confident they will win.”
Wahome Wa’Matinga, the UDA senatorial candidate from Nyeri who formerly served as the Chairman of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) for Gachagua, said the nomination is significant for the region.
He stated, “We were afraid yesterday, but now we’re extremely delighted it’s Gachagua.”
Even though UDA supporters in Tharaka Nithi chastised the nomination, celebrations were reported in Nyeri, Eldoret, and other sections of the Rift Valley.
The celebrations came after demonstrations on Saturday, when word spread that Gachagua had been replaced by Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki.
After a night-long discussion in which numerous options were examined, Ruto picked his running mate on Sunday afternoon.
Senator Kithure Kindiki of Tharaka Nithi, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, Murang’a Women Representative Alice Wahome, and Speaker Justin Muturi were also seeking to deputise Ruto.
Kindiki was conspicuously absent from the press presentation in Karen when Gachagua was presented, while the rest were present.
