– The church explained government directive limiting number of congregants to 100 per service will block other members
– Pastor Ambrose Njoroge said most of the members had families with young children thus barring them will affect wholesome fellowship
– Places of worship were closed in March when the government announced ban on all forms of gathering to prevent spread of coronavirus
Parklands Baptist Church has said it will continue with the virtual services despite government allowing resumption of congregational gatherings in phases.
In a statement on Friday, July 10, senior pastor Ambrose Njoroge explained the government directive to limit number of worshipers to 100 per service will not be sufficient to members.
Njoroge said the church had also taken note of the guideline that barred persons below 13 and above 58 years of age saying most congregants had families with young children.
“We are therefore concerned that the wholesome family fellowship which we greatly value will be affected if we reopen under the current guidelines. Consequently, we shall not have physical gatherings taking place and wish to continue airing our online services,” he stated.
On Monday, July 6, President Uhuru Kenyatta reviewed guidelines aimed at stemming COVID-19, after which he allowed places of worship to be reopened but with limited number.
“Places of worship will commence phased re-opening for congregational worship and public (in-person) worship in strict conformity with all applicable guidelines and protocols, including the self-regulating guidelines developed by the Interfaith Council,” said Uhuru.
Places of worship were closed in March when the government announced ban on all forms of gathering to prevent spread of coronavirus.
Understanding tribulations of many faithful who could no longer congregate, Uhuru directed an inter-faith council be constituted to give the way forward on reopening.
“That conscious of Kenya as a God-fearing nation, I direct the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Health to hasten their engagement with religious leaders; with the objective of developing protocols that will be adopted to guide a more participatory way of worship,” he said during Madaraka Day.
