Is President Uhuru Kenyatta preparing for 2022 campaigns? This is the question some Kenyans are asking after photos of Uhuru Kenyatta branded merchandise for 2022 campaigns surfaced online. In the material, the previous ”Im finishing the journey with Uhuru Kenyatta” has been changed to ”I’m renewing the journey with Uhuru Kenyatta, 2022.”

The Head of State has previously refuted claims he intends to stay in office for another term, as the constitution prohibits. On June 19th, during a webinar hosted by the Atlantic Council under the theme, “strengthening US-Africa ties through trade,” President Kenyatta assured that he will neither contravene the existing two-term limit nor alter the length of a presidential term from the current five years.

“It is unfortunate that some people have misinterpreted the scenario of a referendum to change a constitution to mean that certain individuals want to change that Constitution to extend presidential term,” he said.

“If there is one thing, Kenyans are clear about since 1992 when we introduced multiparty  is the two- term limit and there is no single president who has broken that, and I do not intend to be the first,” the President added.

However, the constitution does not bar him from becoming country’s Prime Minister after 2022. A position of an Executive Prime Minister has been added in the proposed constitutional changes under the BBI.
