The Galana Kulalau Irrigation Project has come back to life and Kenyans can today see fruits of the state funded project. On Wednesday, Interior PS Karanja Kibicho was accompanied by fellow PSs & officials from the National Irrigation Authority to inspect the initiative.

”We have inspected progress at the 10,000-acre Galana-Kulalu farm. The project is 85% complete & incorporates drip irrigation system for production of maize & other high-value crops like bananas & mangoes,” Kibicho said.

The PS said the government aims to properly implement the Galana-Kulalu irrigation scheme and in the future, utilize all the 1.8 million acres to plant produce that will make country food secure throughout the year.

” Our vision is to properly implement the Galana-Kulalu irrigation scheme & in the future, utilize all the 1.8 million acres so as to achieve self sustainability & become food-secure.Our site visit has proven that this is possible due to the success of the 10, 000-acre model farm,” he added.

A year ago, AU Envoy Raila Odinga visited Tana River to inspect the Galana Model Farm Project which seeks to revive the Galana Kulalu Irrigation scheme. It is believed President Uhuru Kenyatta reached out to Raila Odinga to spearhead the process of reviving the irrigation project which had cost the taxpayer a 7b loss.
