President Uhuru Kenyatta has commended the Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) for its efforts in improving service delivery in Nairobi and its catchment. The President expressed satisfaction with the progress made by NMS in implementing the directives he gave to the new agency.

The directives were aimed at enhancing service provision in the areas of waste collection and disposal, water and sanitation, housing and urban development, transport and public works which have been implemented in earnest within the first 100 days.

The President challenged NMS to work towards making Nairobi a model city and demonstrate that Nairobi can be the model of our Post Covid-19 National Recovery Strategy under the top leadership led by Director General Mohammed Badi.

Major General Badi assured the Head of State of his agency’s determination to transform Nairobi into a smart city by fully implementing its broad mandate. DG Badi said NMS had created new jobs by employing the youth and street families in its projects through the government’s “Kazi Mtaani” initiative.

On re-carpeting of CBD roads, NMS has completed 30 percent of all the roads and is using Kazi Mtaani initiative. NMS has engaged our youth in drainage clearing, waste management and rehabilitation of roads.

NMS has drilled community water boreholes and water purification facilities at Kiboro Primary School (Mathare), Chief’s Camp (Mathare North) and at Kibra DCC’s office. Communities neighbouring the boreholes receive treated water for their domestic use at no cost.

With the success recorded, the NMS will close down more than 80 illegal dumpsites in the city. The NMS is now after garbage cartels in the city. According to Mr. Badi, the NMS has identified 110 such illegal dumping areas, and cleared 82 of solid waste with enforcement for closure ongoing.

Badi said that the move follows a directive by President Uhuru to crack down on all illegal dumpsites in the capital as well as gazette legal solid waste dumpsites for both public and private solid waste collectors.

Additionally, 35 solid waste collection points are being designated across the city. The NMS contracted the National Youth Service to help in garbage collection across the 85 wards in the county. With only a 500,000 tonnes capacity, Dandora dumpsite is over three times full, holding more than 1.8 million tonnes of solid waste. It is Nairobi’s main dumpsite.

As it is known unlicensed garbage collection business in Nairobi is a multibillion-shilling industry. The cartels have formed parallel illegal dumping sites across the county where they dispose solid waste after collecting them from residents who pay for their services. The businesses are controlled by cartels who include elected leaders.

The NMS is on track on the ongoing urban renewal and affordable housing projects in Ngara and Pangani neighbourhoods. The housing projects are being implemented by the state department of housing, NMS and Nairobi City County.
