Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya Coalition party leader Raila Odinga on Thursday, 19th May met South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit in Juba.

In a statement, the former Prime Minister expressed gratitude for meeting President Salva Kiir.

He stated that he is happy at the strides they’re making regarding infrastructure and with their willingness to cooperate even more robustly with the rest of Africa.

“It’s always a pleasure meeting South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit. I am happy at the strides they’re making regarding infrastructure and their willingness to cooperate even more robustly with the rest of Africa,” Raila tweeted.

Raila left the country on Wednesday, 18th May after launching the Affordable Housing project in Kisumu.

He was received by South Sudan Major General Samuel Nandwa and Roads Minister Simon Mijak Mijok.

Raila who is also African Union (AU) High Representative for Infrastructure Development is expected to commission a 3.6 km bridge that will connect Juba to the rest of the East Africa region.

The construction of the Freedom Bridge began in 2013 but following the outbreak of civil war at the end of that year, the project was put on hold. It was only in March 2015 that the construction of the Freedom Bridge was inaugurated by President Salva Kiir.

The $91 million infrastructure project was supposed to be completed by 2018 but in the wake of another violent episode in Juba in July 2016, Japanese workers were evacuated and the bridge’s construction was put on hold once again.

The 350m-long bridge is aimed at relieving Juba Nile Bridge from traffic congestion and stimulating economic activity in the area.
