ODM leader Raila Odinga on Friday left Kenya for the United States.

Before his departure, the former Prime Minister visited Lee Funeral Home to view the body of retired President Mwai Kibaki, who died earlier today. The two worked together in the grand coalition government between 2008 and 2013.

In a statement, ODM confirmed that its leader will be away for some days.

“Raila Odinga, the party’s leader, left for the United States this afternoon on a one-week official visit. The party added. We wish our party leader and his group safe skies.”

According to an itinerary issued by Prof Makau Mutua, the spokesperson for Raila’s presidential campaign headquarters, the former Prime Minister would meet with senior US government officials as well as senior members of the US Congress in Washington, DC.

He will also meet with major African-American leaders, Kenyans in the diaspora, and key think tanks in the United States.

Governors Ndiritu Muriithi (Laikipia), Wycliffe Oparanya (Kakamega), and James Ongwae (Kisii) will accompany Raila.

Other in the trip include Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua, former Aldai MP Dr Sally Kosgey, Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang, Kathiani MP Robert Mbui, Prof Mutua, and former Kenya Ambassador to the United States Elkanah Odembo.

The opposition chief will use the journey to lay out his vision for Kenya, emphasise the strategic and historic importance of the US-Kenya relationship, and highlight the fundamental interests that the two countries share.

Mr Odinga’s second leg of the tour will take him to Silicon Valley in San Francisco, where he will hold conversations with leaders and entrepreneurs in the IT and technology field in the hopes of fostering partnerships.

As the August General Election approaches, Raila is expected to utilise his tour to explain to the foreign community what his coalition party, Azimio La Umoja One Kenya, stands for.

“Mr Odinga’s campaign will be fueled by the Azimio message of an inclusive, democratic, and caring society. At the heart of the US visit is a message of hope and opportunity for all Kenyans,” Prof Mutua added.
