Rashford’s campaign against child poverty during the coronavirus pandemic in England helped him receive the special recognition.

During the month of June, Rashford sent the United Kingdom government an impassioned plea to extend free school meals for children.

The UK prime minister Boris Johnson initially ruled out the request before later making a u-turn.

The institution explained they are proud of the gesture by the Manchester United striker and had no choice but to honour him.

“It’s a proud day for myself and my family. When you look at the great names that have been awarded this doctorate in the past, it’s humbling,” Rashford said in a statement.

Former Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson and Bobby Charlton have previously received the award from the University of Manchester.

Meanwhile, Rashford and his teammates at Manchester United are currently occupying fifth position on the Premier League table with three games to end the season.
