He appealed to County Governments to assist schools in construction of classrooms in the remaining months before the actual re-opening.

The CS made the remarks in Bomet during the inspection tour to evaluate the level of preparedness in the county,

“We need to educate children and a workforce for the development of our nation, but life is more precious and their health is paramount for them to learn well,” said Magoha.

He pointed out that most teachers training colleges were adequately prepared for the new normal and directed other institutions to do the same.

On his part, Dr Barchok said that his government was already supporting learning institutions especially in the provision of bursaries to needy students.

He said the region was 30 per cent prepared to start learning in the new normal situation, saying teachers should be prepared further before the start of the new academic calendar.

“I want to assure you that we will also invest in the infrastructural development of the learning institutions in the region,” the governor added.

In order to flatten the COVID-19 curve, students from primary and secondary schools to university level have been kept out of learning since March 2020 and reopening has been proposed to be in January 2021.
