Kenyans on Twitter (KoT) have been sharing what appears to be a scandal in the making.
Screenshots seen by Kenyan Business Feed show that some lines which were confirmed registered a few days ago are no longer registered.
The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) gave the USSD code *106# for checking if one’s number(s) is registered. Some people that checked say their registration details were fine, however, two days later, when they checked again, they found that their details were not okay.
Breaking: Notorious Telco Safaricom has now manipulated their system and are asking almost everyone to go to their shop and update their sim-card even after CAK said the process had been cancelled. As Usual, this is null and void. We registered the SIM cards when we bought them! pic.twitter.com/IzsFPq9mNe
Things changed after CA clarified that those that had registered need not re-register. This had been communicated late after Safaricom had harvested people’s ID card pictures, passport photos and signatures.
”The regulations do not require subscribers to submit photos of themselves during registration or verification exercise. However, records of subscribers must include identification documents such as the National ID, service cards for disciplined forces, passports and birth certification whichever is applicable.” – Ezra Chiloba, Director General of the Communication Authority of Kenya clarified on Sunday.
Media houses carried another part of the CA statement, clarifying that only those that had not registered their lines to do so.

Today, Safaricom clients are reporting what appears to be an act of coercion. Check below:
3 days ago when i checked my particulars with @SafaricomPLC everything was okay. Now i am being told to go to the nearest agent to re-submit my details. Is the telco de-registering everyone to go for fresh registration ?
