Second phase of kazi mtaani in Kisumu kicks off

KISUMU, Kenya, Jul 15 – Over 7,000 youth in Kisumu County have kicked off the second phase of kazi mtaani as the government rolls out a Sh10 billion program across the country to cushion the youth from economic effects of COVID-19 pandemic.

Principal Secretary for ICT and Innovation, Jerome Ochieng who launched the program in Kisumu says the number of the youth who registered for the work increased three fold.

Ochieng says the goernment learnt from the challenges experienced in the first phase to ensure the second phase is implemented seamlessly.

The PS says the coverage for the settlements areas has also increased as the government strives to ensure a clean environment.

Ochieng says the funds are already allocated in this year’s financial budget and called for concerted effort among the people to ensure the programme succeeds.

“President Uhuru Kenyatta is keen to engage the young meaningfully during this period as the country battles the spread of Coronavirus,” he said.

Majority of young people were rendered jobless as the pandemic took toll in the country and the programme is aimed at engaging the youth to deter them from joining criminal activities.
