Security heightened as KCPE kicks off in Mandera

Security has been heightened as the Kenya Certificate of Primary Examination (KCPE) kicks off in Mandera.
Schools along the border with Somalia have been earmarked and extra security provided to curb any interference by criminal gangs, Al-Shabaab.
Mandera County Director of Education Abdi sheikh said the examination will be airlifted to all centers that are facing security challenges and are very far.
Mr. Abdi sheikh said the government has put in place all necessary measures for smooth doing of exams.
Mandera County has a total 144 centers whereby some 6 337 candidates are set to begin their exams.
The county government has in the last six years invested heavily in the education by employing teachers to fill gaps left by non local teachers who fled the region in 2014 after a wave of Al-Shabaab attacks that left dozens dead.
The Ministry of Education has put up stringent measures to curb examination cheating in the region to avoid cancellation.
Cases of examination cheating have reduced in the county compared to the past years.
