A power transformer in Kanyange Village, Othaya Sub-County, Nyeri County, which supplies late President Mwai Kibaki’s home and neighboring residences, was vandalized three days after his burial on April 30.
Interestingly, the vandals committed the crime despite the fact that Kibaki’s home is guarded by elite Recce Squad officers all the time. The transformer is 50 metres from Kibaki’s residence.
The transformer was smashed and its components stolen on Tuesday, May 3.
The robbers are thought to have used a tea plantation a few meters from Kibaki’s homestead as a hiding place.
Police believe the vandalism lasted at least an hour.
Engineers from Kenya Power were seen replacing another transformer on the vandalized pole-mounts on Thursday, May 5.
Benjamin Onsomo, a Kenya Power distribution engineer in Othaya, claimed the area’s energy supply was shut off at 11 pm on Tuesday.
According to Onsomo, at least 400 residences near Kibaki’s mansion were left in the dark as a result of the outage.
“After the vandalism, which was not immediately reported to us, we attempted to power the transformer, but the line couldn’t hold. We deployed a team to the spot at that point, and we were startled to hear that the transformer had been vandalized,” he added.
Onsomo said they reported the theft to the Othaya Police Station on Wednesday and began the process of replacing the stolen power converter shortly after.
More than 50kg of copper components worth at least Sh500,000 were stolen from the Kanyange Village transformer, according to an Othaya Kenya Power officer.
Onsomo said he couldn’t say why the thieves targeted the transformer right away, although the scrap metal trade is now illegal in the country. He claims that the burglars frequently sell the copper components to scrap metal merchants who work under duress.
Neighbors speculated that the robbers took advantage of the area’s heavy rains to do the crime.
A neighbor, Benjamin Githinji, said they were unaware of any unusual activity outside Kibaki’s home on Tuesday night and were surprised to learn of the vandalism the next day, according to the Standard.
It’s yet unknown whether any suspects have been apprehended or how many persons were involved in the incident.
