On Thursday night the internet went into an overdrive when Kenyans saw a photo of Raila Odinga, flanked by Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and Minority Whip Junet Mohammed. The two, Joho and Junet had earlier hired a private jet from Nairobi, to fly to Dubai where Odinga is.
Even though the trip to Dubai may have been to check on the ODM leader who is recovering from a minor surgery on his leg, it was also powerful message to Odinga’s allies and adversaries. The former PM still captures imagination of millions of Kenyans, his absence has been greatly felt. Kenya’s political landscape should therefore be ready for his grand return. Tinga knows this, and must be having something up his sleeve.
On June 29th 2010, Odinga checked himself into Nairobi Hospital where he had a head operation. The country was in a constitutional moment, just like we are today, with the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI). Coincidentally, it was exactly 10 years from June 25th 2020 when Odinga flew to Dubai for his minor surgery.
“Jakom (Raila) is out of the country for a minor surgical operation on his back. It is not a serious health issue, but just a minor one. So, he’s okay,” Dr Oginga, Raila’s eldest brother said on June 25th.
Delighted to see my party leader Baba @RailaOdinga looking fit and in high spirits after undergoing the surgical procedure in Dubai last week. We in Mombasa and the country at large continue to pray for his speedy recovery and a safe return home to Kenya. @JunetMohamedpic.twitter.com/jC7nHdlB7V

Like every politician, Odinga wants to continue staying ahead of the pack. Being the seasoned strategist he is, the ODM leader is likely to stay longer out of the country, to make the hearts of his followers and rivals to grow fonder. Just like he did in May 2014. History has taught us not to ignore even a single move Raila makes.
There could be another grand return, just like the famous ‘Baba while you were away’ moment in 2014, when Odinga came back home to a thunderous reception from millions of his supporters. For this to happen, the AU Envoy must stay longer out of the country.
Odinga’s grand return in 2014 after a six month sabbatical out of the country
In 2014, a number of people had begun writing the political epitaph of Raila Odinga. This started after his third attempt to become Kenya’s president floundered at the polls in which he was a favorite.
Odinga lost to a less fancied Uhuru Kenyatta and some of his aides were contemplating his political retirement. Even though the dynamics then, are very different from what we have today, maybe Raila is about to make another grand return, to Kenya’s political scene. To turn it upside down, once again.
