Several people are feared dead after a fuel tanker exploded in Kakamega’s Muhonje area.
Preliminary reports indicated that the tanker collided head-on with another vehicle before bursting into flames.
By the time of going to press, the cause of the accident had not been established nor had the huge flames been put off.
According to the Redcross, emergency services from the Redcross Action Team, police and the county government had been deployed.

“Reports of a fuel tanker explosion at Muhonje Area in Kakamega. Red Cross Action Team Kakamega, Emergency Medical Services,police and County Fire Brigade are responding,” Red Cross stated.
The explosion was further confirmed by National Police Service (NPS) who stated that their officers have been deployed to secure the scene.
They further advised motorists to exercise caution while approaching the scene of the accident.
“We wish to notify the public of a road traffic accident involving a petrol tanker which has burst into flames at Mukhonje area, near Lwandedi, along Webuye – Eldoret road.
Our officers are at the scene. We urge motorists and onlookers to exercise caution. The number of casualties as a result of the accident is yet to be established,” the law enforcement officers stated.
The accident comes just days after a truck ferrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders exploded near the Mutarakwa area along the Mai Mahiu Road.
At least four cars were burnt beyond recognition after the incident with the police failing to establish the cause of the tragic crash.
“We are pleading with the county government and other agencies to come and help put out this fire. So many houses are burning and there are some people and children trapped in the houses,” a witness claimed.
