Your favorite flamboyant Nairobi governor Mike Sonko is donating alcohol alongside other foodstuffs to Nairobi residents to help them during the coronavirus pandemic.
“We are coming up with local solutions to tackle international problems, we are not letting our people suffer in silence,” Sonko asserted.
“Kenyans under lockdown in Nairobi will receive150ml bottles of Hennessy, masks and hand sanitizers in the food pack, the package which we give to our people to keep themselves safe during this period,” said Sonko in a video he circulated on social media.
The alcohol, as has been revealed, is to help sanitize the throats and intestines of city residents as they go about devouring the donated foodstuffs and minding their daily activities.
“I have lived and ruled in Nairobi and I know what our residents want. I will continue to be responsive to their needs at all times.” Sonko quipped. The governor says that his decision is informed by the popular need of Nairobians who are facing a myriad challenges during this pandemic.
Sonko has defended his decision to give out his food donation hampers including small bottles of Hennessy, a move that elicited mixed reactions from Kenyans and even claimed that his decision to donate alcohol is backed by research conducted by WHO, a misleading assertion.Governor Mike Sonko
But WHO has on several ocassions warned that drinking alcohol cannot protect anyone from being infected with the deadly Covid-19.
Actually, the organisation has warned that excessive use of alcohol exposes one to other health issues that would complicate things for them if they contract the virus.
Instead, the WHO has recommended the use of water and soap or hand sanitisers, which contain at least 60 percent alcohol, to effectively kill particles of Covid-19.
On April 8, the city county boss claimed he had been banned from distributing food relief to the needy living in slums around the city and went ahead to do distributions in his Machakos home county.
However, he seems to have received the motivation to return to the city and continue with his charitable deeds.
Sonko, through the Sonko Rescue Team, has been distributing foodstuff, sanitisers and face masks to people living in different parts of Nairobi County.
But on a now defiant tone, he says no one will stop his charitable reggae and he will continue to help the poor people who rely on him.
“The bureaucrats in big offices have demeaning opinions about our charitable works but be sure that this is what city people need.” Sonko defiantly noted.
