Sossion publicly clashes with Magoha, proposes radical changes in reopening schools

The Kenya National Union of Teachers Secretary General Wilson Sossion has dismissed the proposal by Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha’s plan to have students repeat classes come next year.

According to the KNUT boss, forcing students to repeat classes as directed by the CS will lead to students psychological torture since most of them had already covered the first term work.

“You will create a problem, psychological torture and things that will not work, let us not experiment and when people are putting forward a theory that has not been tested and they call it a professional observation that is fundamentally wrong and therefore we begin from where we stopped and we will move,” he explained.

During his address today at Knut offices, the teachers’ union boss proposed that should classes resume in the month of January 2021 exams would be conducted in July or August and the academic year ending around the same time.

Sossion proposed a change in the academic calendar, adding that a new academic year should begin in the month of September 2021 preceded by a short break.

A section of netizens were quick to dismiss him as a petty attention seeker, noting that he is an Education Stakeholders and should have floated his idea in the proposal at a different forum before the proposal was tabled.

The government stated that the 2020 academic calendar has been re-organized and all basic education learning institutions with learning set to resume in January next year.

 “Faced with this uncertain environment, the stakeholders have resolved to reopen all basic education learning institutions in January 2021. This is based on the assumption that the infection curve will have flattened by December,” said Magoha, who spoke from Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, accompanied by education stakeholders.
