For the first time in many months, there was little tension when President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto met for the National Prayer Breakfast at the Safari Park this morning.
Unlike the last two meetings where the President ignored his principal assistant, today they shook hands.
In his speech, the DP wished his boss a happy retirement after the August 9 General Election.
“I have had the privilege of serving as DP to my friend Uhuru; as you head to retirement, may God give you every aspiration of your heart,” he said.
When he took to the podium, the Head of State thanked Dr Ruto for the prayer.
“I do hope that the prayers of the William Ruto will come to pass,” he said.

Then he added something that had a low-key political message.
“It’s my intention to pass on the baton unbroken. I’m looking forward to a lot of peace in retirement,” he said.
This comes days after Jubilee Vice-chairman David Murathe, a close confidant to the President revealed that the Kenyan was leader will hand over power to the winner in the forthcoming presidential election.
Constitutionally that sounds right, but coming from Murathe who has in the past bullishly stated Uhuru will not hand over power to a thief (Ruto) was shocking.
Questions were raised considering that the Head of State has publicly endorsed the former Prime as his choice successor.
“Uhuru is not on the ticket. He will going home in the next 80 days and he has to oversee a peaceful transition and peaceful election. He has stepped into his shoe of being the President and the Commander-in-Chief.
“You don’t expect him to hit the ground running that’s why you find it is Martha Karua and Raila. They are both on the ticket,” Murathe said.
