Days after the Nation Media Group announced plans to layoff staff in its efforts to restructure the company, today, Friday, July 3, it has made its intention firing workers.
TV news anchor Ken Mijungu is one of the journalists who have been sacked from the media house after seven years of service.
Mijungu took to social media to announce the heartbreaking news and said the axe had fallen on him after he was issued with a termination letter.
“The axe fell at NTV newsroom and I was on its way. Seven years in those corridors summed up in a two-page letter of termination,” the media personality said.
The journalist further thanked God for the opportunity and thanked his fans for staying tuned.
“We live to fight another day. Thanks to God, He remains the greatest, thank you for the opportunity and thank you for always staying tuned,” he said.
On Wednesday, July 1, a statement from the Kimathi Street-based media house indicated the coronavirus pandemic had caused a drastic drop in revenues.
To that effect, it said it would re-engineer its operations to accelerate its digital transformation.
“This will include focusing on resourcing people in new areas critical for the Group. Regrettably, this will result in a reduction of our workforce,” the statement read in part.
Among those sacked included Swahili anchor Nancy Onyancha and her husband Job Mwaura who were both working at K24 TV.
Besides the two, other employees who were fired included Ken Wariahe (Swahili anchor and editor), Isabella Kituri (anchor/Swahili editor), Caroline Wambui (acting managing editor), Shukri Wachu (education/crime reporter), Apollo Kamau (political reporter), Mercy Milanoi (business reporter), Joy Kiruki ( features editor), Gloria Milimu (health reporter) and Kimani Githuku (reporter).
Others were features reporter Dennis Matara, sports anchor Tony Kwalanda as well as Fred Indimuli (news anchor/editor) among others.
