President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced an increase of minimum wage by 12 percent effective Sunday, 1st May.

Speaking on Sunday, 1st May, during Labour Day celebrations at Nyayo stadium, the Head of State said the government had taken the decision to cushion Kenyan workers against the rising cost of living occasioned by several external economic factors.

“As a caring government, we find there is a compelling case to review the minimum wages so as to cushion our workers against further erosions, and in that effect, I today declare an increase of the minimum wage by 12 per cent with effect from 1st May 2022,” Uhuru stated amid cheers from the workers.

The minimum wage in Kenya currently stands at Ksh13,500 since its last review in 2018.

President Kenyatta further directed Labour and Social Protection CS Simon Chelugui to immediately gazette COTU’s representative on the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) Board of Trustees.

At the same time, the President revisited the various measures taken by the Government to cushion Kenyans from the negative economic impacts of Covid-19 and regretted that the ongoing geopolitical conflict in eastern Europe involving Russia and Ukraine was slowing down the global economy’s recovery from the pandemic.

On the cost of fuel, President Kenyatta said the country’s fuel subsidy programme had ensured that Kenya maintained among the lowest pump prices in the world, and cautioned oil marketers against hoarding petroleum products.
