The Government of United Kingdom has announced that
they have reduced the requirements for job applicants from Kenya with effect
from the year 2021 to a minimum skill level of A level or its equivalent which
initially stood at Degree level under the 27 member European Union bloc system.

This move is viewed as an attempt by the UK government to attract a large pool of skilled personnel from Kenya without degrees and also to enable them to compete fairly with job seekers form other regions.

Under the deal, “European Union and non-European Union citizens will be treated fairly and equally”.

According to the deal, the selection of candidates will be done on merit based on the level of skills, minimum salary requirements set among other criteria.

This is a good move for most Kenyans without degrees who are seeking for employment opportunities especially with hands-on skills in various fields of study such as in the field of Information Technology.

This comes as a reprieve for most Kenyans especially during this period of Coronavirus pandemic and its worst effects on the employment sector.

Census report released in February, 2020 revealed that most productive Kenyans who are youths below 34 years of age are jobless.

“The conventional population of youths aged 18 to 34
was 13.7 million, out of which 61 percent were working while 1.6 million were
seeking work or indicated that there was no work available,” Kenya National
Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), Director General Zachary Mwangi stated.
