VIDEO: Kisumu residents suspend Covid rules as thousands battle teargas to attend Abeny Jachiga burial

Thousands of residents in Kisumu have disregarded directives and guidelines provided by government on the deadly coronavirus as they vow to attend the burial of the late Luo popular musician Benard Onyango Obonyo aka Abenny Jachiga.

The mourners are currently engaged in a cat and mouse game as the body of the late musician is being transported from the Port Florence Community Hospital morgue to his Chiga home for the burial ceremony to be held later on this afternoon.

Reports from the ground indicate uniformed anti-riot police officers who have been deployed to ensure the covid rule are observed have currently cordoned off the home of the late musician where the burial ceremony is to be conducted.

A section of the crowds were quoted saying that the teargas in fact was helping them to get rid of the coronavirus and asked for more police officers.

In a bid to curb the spread of the coronavirus, government had imposed strict mitigation measures on the manner funerals are supposed to be conducted, where it directed that it can only be done between 9am and 3pm with close family members not exceeding fifteen {15} persons.

In a brief biography summarized by comedian Adede Owalla, Abenny Jachiga ( Benard Onyango Obonyo) was first taken ill on 3rd June 2020 at Aga Khan hospital Kisumu for a pneumonia related case and later discharged after his condition improved .

“His situation however deteriorated on 9th and was taken to St. Elizabeth hospital Chiga before being transfered to St. Jairus hospital near airport yesterday at around 6:00 PM where he sadly succumbed ” Family member.

“Ben was born in 1987 in East Kolwa – Chiga location , Kisumu east sub county , Kisumu county and started his musical career at the age of 21 as an instrumentalist.

“He was mentored by the likes of Lady Maureen and had a brief stay with Jakadenge before he started his own band which for several years played at the former Gwara Gwara club in Kondele.

“In mid 2018 after the release of his hit song ” kasinde” in his album with the similar title “kasinde” , Ben moved with his band to Nairobi in search of a greener pasture.

“Ben equally mentored several artists and instrumentalists like Lawy Jakabonyo , Boss wuod Nyasembo, Awilo Jakatolo , pianist Osto (his brother) among others and also a successful family man”.
