Machakos Gubernatorial aspirant Nzioka Waita has promised to upgrade Matuu town to a Municipality status if elected in the upcoming general election.

Speaking on Thursday during a meeting with business stakeholders drawn from Masinga and Yatta Sub-Counties, Waita said the move will greatly improve the town’s economic fortunes as well as that of the larger Machakos County.

“Matuu lies within the Nairobi Metropolitan Area (NMA). Upgrading it this way will attract World Bank funding and we shall also pursue the funds designated for NMA,” Waita said

The former State House Chief of Staff vowed to end water scarcity by laying out reticulation for water from Masinga dam to benefit the people of Masinga, Yatta and Mwala.

In a bid to ensure equality and inclusivity in the County government leadership, Waita said the County Attorney post will be appointed from Masinga sub-county while that of Speaker of the County Assembly will be nominated from Yatta Sub-County.

“The Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) will be key agents of development in our government. The MCAs know every corner of the wards, better than anyone else. They carry a huge burden and they need resources,” Waita said

“The county government gets about Ksh12B annually. If 700 million is injected into Matuu we should be able to have well equipped health facilities,” he added

He was accompanied by his running mate and Machakos County Assembly Speaker Florence Mwangangi who reiterated the duo’s commitment to ensuring a corruption free government focused on development for the people.

“We know how the county government should work, and we will protect your taxes and resources. We will lift our struggling women with a Fund to support their businesses,” she said

With 74 days remaining to the August 9 general election the duo has heightened its campaigns to hunt for votes across the County.
