The war against the spread of the highly infectious Covid-19 in Nyeri County received a major boost following a donation of infra-red thermometers which are critical in the diagnosis of the respiratory disease.
The donations handed over to Governor Mutahi Kahiga will be deployed at all entry points for screening people in the spirited fight against the spread of the coronavirus.
The thermos-gun machines were donated by the Foundation for Dialogue Kenya, a non-governmental organization which has also been spearheading the fight against radicalization and recruitment into groups advancing violent extremism in the region.
FDK’s director Dr. Michael Mugo said they were also supporting community health volunteers with sanitisers, personal protection equipment (PPEs) among other initiatives.
Last month, the governor activated a raft of measures to ensure that the county which is yet to register any case of Coronavirus has its people protected.
Kahiga ordered road blocks to be erected along all the major roads leading into the county where travelers would be screened before being allowed to proceed.
“We will roll out teams of health workers to maintain round the clock screening at entry points such as Kangocho, Nanyuki-Nyeri border, Nairutia, Kariko and Mukurwei-ni,” the Governor had indicated.
He had further pledged that the county and national government would be distributing 10,000 bottles of free sanitisers every week to key sectors such as transport to combat the pandemic.
The county’s fire department also undertook a major fumigation exercise in both Nyeri and Karatina towns.
Keys areas fumigated included bus terminii, markets and streets.
The Governor appealed to area residents to strictly adhere to the guidelines being issued by the Ministry of Health in order to tame the spread of the disease.
“Wash your hands regularly and observe the social distancing edict to avoid infection,” said the Governor.
