Why CS Opiyo Wandayi is Losing the Siaya Power War to Governor Orengo

The political landscape of Siaya County is shifting as Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi suffers a series of humiliating tactical defeats at the hands of Governor James Orengo. Once a subtle rivalry, it has now escalated into a public display of dominance, leaving the sitting Cabinet Secretary grappling with relevance in his community.

From the burial of former Councillor Onyango Onyango to the recent events in Ugunja, it is evident that Wandayi’s influence is rapidly diminishing.

How Orengo Neutralized Wandayi

The tension reached a breaking point during the burial of former Ugunja MCA Odero Koor. Reports indicate that Wandayi’s camp had allegedly organized a group to disrupt Governor Orengo’s speech. However, the plan backfired spectacularly. Orengo arrived with a massive wave of grassroots support that completely overshadowed the CS, reducing him to a “laughing stock” in a constituency he represented for three terms.

This cold reception confirms that James Orengo has effectively neutralized Wandayi’s influence, making the high-ranking Cabinet Secretary look inexperienced on the very ground he once called home.

The Betrayal of Ouma Onyango: A New Low in Siaya Politics

In a desperate attempt to pivot from his administrative failures, CS Wandayi has reportedly directed his frustration toward Ouma Onyango, a Nairobi-based budding politician. Once a close ally of the Minister, Ouma Onyango has now become the target of what many describe as a “staged” show of force.

Under the false pretext of security threats, organized groups roughed up Ouma during the chaotic burial event. This transition from policy-making to the physical intimidation of a young leader without a formal portfolio signals a breakdown in the Minister’s camp. During the scuffle, Ouma was reportedly robbed of cash worth 20,000 KSh, two mobile phones, and a silver watch, sparking outrage across the Siaya youth movement.

Insecurity and the Future of Ugunja Leadership

The rising trend of political goonship associated with the Minister’s faction has led to a serious backlash. Notable Siaya leaders, including Otieno Alur, Fredrick Zb Owino, and MCA Odawa of Sigomre, reportedly skipped the burial citing security concerns and planned violence.

Residents are now raising alarms, questioning if Wandayi has become more of a problem than a solution for Ugunja. As the external community condemns these retrogressive tactics, the question remains: Can Opiyo Wandayi recover his standing, or has Governor Orengo permanently closed the chapter on his regional dominance?
