Rebellion has increased against Dock Workers Union general secretary Simon Sang with employees at the port of Mombasa calling for his immediate removal from office. Sang is said to have lost favour with the employees over his alleged lone ranger brand of leadership. He is accused of using workers to pursue personal interests.

A union faction allied to chairman Mohamed Sheria has exposed Sang as having been behind the sacking to 28 union officials in 2015 ahead of union elections. “Sang orchestrated the sacking of his own union officials to get rid of them after he found it difficult to control them ahead of 2016 union elections.

Mr. Sang

After he made a comeback, he pretended to be fighting for their reinstatement yet behind their backs he has been backstabbing them,” said a union official allied to Sheria. Sheria whose popularity is growing among port employees is said to be using his powerful contacts in government to push for reinstatement of the sacked union officials to a shame the embattled general secretary and render him irrelevant in the eyes of workers.

Sheria has further accused Sang of taking millions of shillings of imprests for luxury trips abroad disguised as benchmarking trips which are of no benefit to members. “In the recent past, he took Sh3 million for a purported bench-marking trip but instead of boarding a plane to foreign capitals, he headed to his village in Kuresoi.

The amount was now being recovered from members subscriptions. When we ask these questions he employs propaganda,” Sheria was quoted saying. It has been established that employees are collecting signatures to call for an AGM in September and kick Sang out of the union leadership. Fearing the outcome, Sang plans to prevent the AGM from taking place.
