Aspirants under the Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM) met yesterday to discuss the way forward ahead of the General Election.
The main agenda of the meeting held at a hotel in Machakos was to deliberate the options available for Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka after severing ties with Raila Odinga’s Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party.
Interestingly, the majority of the candidates insisted that Kalonzo stays in Azimio.
A vote was taken where 45 aspirants agreed that the former Vice-President should return to Azimio.
Five aspirants, however, encouraged their leader to contest for the presidency.
An aspirant was almost beaten and chased out of the meeting after suggesting that Kalonzo should close ranks with Deputy President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
Some like Machakos Wiper gubernatorial candidate Wavinya Ndeti said they had put a lot of money on campaign materials bearing Azimio colours, slogans and photos.
“This meeting has the blessings of our leader Kalonzo Musyoka,” an aspirant said.
Kalonzo is currently in the United States.
After nominating Narc-Kenya party leader Martha Karua to be his running mate, Raila offered Kalonzo the post of Chief Minister if Azimio wins the presidential election.
“We were not even aware that the position would be given to Kalonzo. Why is Azimio not involving us in talks?” Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior posed when Kalonzo was unveiling his presidential bid.
Mutula, his Kitui counterpart Enoch Wambua and Makueni MP Dan Maanzo have been accused of misadvising Kalonzo to run for the top seat.
They have in recent past admitted that it is likely that Kalonzo’s candidature will force a run-off. The politicians say this will cement his ability to negotiate a better deal in either Azimio or Kenya Kwanza.
