Emmanuel Wanyonyi ran a new Championship Record of 1:43.76, to win a sixth gold medal for Kenya in the men’s 800m at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Nairobi.

Algeria’s Mohamed Ali Gouaned took silver with a time of 1:44:45 while Noah Kibet bagged the bronze after finishing third in 1:44:88 at the Moi Sports Centre, Kasarani.

“I cannot believe I have run that time. We had a tactic to win 1-2 but we almost lost that after I was tripped with 200m to go. I had to find a way to come back from that and I decided to kick in the last 100m,” Wanyonyi told Mozzart Sport.

“I talked to my coach, Janeth Jepkosgei, before the race and she told us this was war and I am happy I have delivered this gold for myself, my coach and the country. To do it in a record is just unbelievable.”

Elsewhere, Purity Chepkirui reclaimed the World Athletics Under-20 Championships women’s 1,500m title for Kenya after nine years.

Chepkirui won Kenya’s seventh gold medal after timing 4:16.07. Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji took silver in 4:16.39 while Winnie Jemutai claimed silver in 4:18.99.

Olympic 1,500m champion Faith Chepng’etich was the last Kenya to hold the title, having won in 2012 in Barcelona.
