Athletics Kenya [AK] has confirmed that over 400 athletes will take part in the upcoming track and field weekend meeting on Friday and Saturday at the Nyayo National Stadium.

According to AK Youth Committee chairman Barnaba Korir, athletes hoping to represent Kenya during the World Athletics Championships in Oregon and Birmingham Commonwealth Games must use the event well as a stepping stone to the forthcoming global competitions.

“Preparations are complete and it is all systems go for the weekend meeting at Nyayo.Everyone involved is excited and looking forward to it.Several runners have confirmed participation and it will be an interesting and competitive affair.

“This will form basis of what is earmarked to happen ahead of us.International calendar is packed and Kenyans should use home soil contest to prepare sufficiently for the world competitions ” he said

Korir noted that owing to a large turnout expected with an electronic timing system also being in place, the championships will take two days and not one day as had been planned earlier.

Given the rich menu of local athletics events, 2022 is a season that will keep most athletes busy.

From track and field, to road and cross country, athletes will have opportunities to display their talent and earn prize money in various local competitions.

The local menu this year appears richer than last year’s. From January to December, it will be action after action, especially in regions that have produced countless athletics big names.

Commonwealth Games will be held in Birmingham on August 2-7, before paving way for the World Championships, on August 17–22.
