The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has called upon the government to address mental health after police data revealed that 483 people have taken their own lives in a three-month period.
The reports indicated that Kiambu County was leading with 109 suicides in the last three months. Central Kenya had the highest number, at 181 cases.
DCI boss George Kinoti said that this was an alarming and worrying trend as such high numbers had never been witnessed in the past.
“We have never recorded such a high number of suicides before and this is not only alarming but calls for urgent remedial measures,” said Kinoti.
The probability of men committing suicide is higher than that of women, according to research polls. Mental health has become a crucial issue calling for cooperation to create safer spaces for anyone to open up.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic struck in March last year, there has been an increase in the incidence of mental illnesses, as many have lost their jobs and other sources of livelihoods. There has also been a rise in crime in the ensuing struggle for survival.
