Background

The Media Council of Kenya is an independent national institution set up to safeguard media freedom, enhance professionalism and arbitrate disputes. The statutory body was established under Article 34 (5) of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and actualized by the Media Council Act (MCK Act) in 2013 for purposes of setting media standards, ensuring compliance with those standards and to reflect the interests of all sectors in the society.

Among its flagship projects are the Annual Media Summit and Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA), which is scheduled to take place in August 2019 respectively in Mombasa. The project will require adequate funding to enable the Council execute all the planned activities.

In this regard, the Council requires a fundraising consultant who will be expected to deliver on the targets as agreed with the Council.

Job Description

The primary role of the Consultant will be to develop a strategic fundraising plan for the MCK, with particular focus on the Annual Media Summit and Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA) and their future sustainability.

The Consultant will be required to plan persuasive approaches and pitches that will convince potential partners to do business with the MCK, develop a rapport with new clients, and set targets for sales and provide support that will continually improve the relationship while growing and retaining existing accounts by presenting new solutions and services to clients.

Strategic planning will be a key responsibility of the Consultant especially in developing the pipeline of new sponsors, a thorough knowledge of the market and the benefits of the Summit & Awards.  The Consultant will report to MCK Chief Executive Officer while working closely with the various execution Committees.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities and duties of the Consultant can be summarized as follows:

 New Business Development

  • Prospect for potential new sponsors and turn them into revenue.
  • Set up meetings between client decision makers and MCK contact persons.
  • Plan approaches and pitches.
  • Develop proposals that meet MCK needs, concerns, and objectives.
  • Handle partner objections and differences to a positive conclusion.

Project Fundraising

  • Develop and deliver a comprehensive and coherent fundraising strategy for the MCK flagship projects.
  • Set and achieve realistic time-limited fundraising targets, agreed in consultation with key staff and the CEO
  • Create a sustainable and diverse fundraising portfolio, with funding streams including individuals, corporates, government agencies and Public agencies
  • Carry out prospect research and develop a comprehensive fundraising database that captures all relevant information, as well as handling all administrative aspects of fundraising.

Expected Outputs

In this position, the Consultant will be expected to achieve the following but is not limited to the stated outcomes:

  • Comprehensive list of potential donors
  • Develop an MCK fundraising Strategy for 2019 Annual Media Summit and AJEA
  • Implement MCK fundraising Strategy.
  • Grow the MCK partnership pool for long term project engagements.
  • Enhance MCK corporate relationship directory.
  • Give bi-weekly progress reports on project fundraising.
  • A final comprehensive report on achievements and milestones reached on MCK Annual media summit and AJEA Strategy 2019.

Competencies

The Consultant engaged for this task will be expected to have the following minimum competencies:

  • Proven success in face to face fundraising while other sales/ fundraising experience is useful in the media/communication industry.
  • Ability to both lead and work collaboratively within a team

  • Ability to easily build rapport with a diverse range of people
  • Excellent communication skills, creativity and the ability to develop new ways to inspire people about what MCK does.

Duration Of Consultancy  

The Consultancy engagement will be for an initial period of six (6 months) as per the terms of agreement with a possibility of an extension.
