Members of Parliament have vowed to ensure a bill seeking to deter hospitals from detaining patients or bodies over unpaid bills sails through.
The MPs who are pushing for amendments to the health act say they will propose a more humane way for hospitals to recover their monies without violating the patients’ rights.
Led by Nyando MP Jared Okello, the law makers accused hospitals of subjecting patients to verbal or physical abuse while being detained in health facilities.
Additionally, they say Universal Health Coverage program must ensure that the most vulnerable citizens access quality healthcare without being crippled by financial hardship.

The Centre for Reproductive Rights, which has been providing technical support to legislators, wants discussions on financing and regulation of the health sector to start.
