35 shortlisted for Court of Appeal judges posts – Weekly Citizen

Thirty-five applicants have been shortlisted to fill vacant positions at the Court of Appeal.
According to sources, the Judicial Service Commission received 113 applications but ended up shortlisting only 35.
The Court of Appeal wants to fill the positions left vacant due to the retirement of Justices John Mwera, GBM Kariuki, Anyara Emukule, Festus Azangalala and Onyango Otieno. Sources further reveal, Justice Erastus Githinji is also on his way out most likely late this year.

Those who have been shortlisted are justices George Odunga, Jesse Lesiit, Hedwig Ong’undi, Stephen Radido, Joel Ngugi, Fredrick Ochieng, Luka Kimaru and Weldon Korir.
Also on the list are Justice Msagha Mbogholi, Justice Aggrey Muchelule and Lady Justice Mumbi Ngugi.
Moses Kurgat, Joyce Majiwa, Abida Ali Aroni, Pauline Nyamweya, Hellen Omondi, Boaz Olao, Hellen Omondi, Maureen Onyango, Christine Meoli and Mary Kasango are also on the list.
Sources within JSC indicate experience will play a key roll in the recruitment to the Court of Appeal as well as gender. Regional balance is also to be considered as well as those disadvantaged in one way or another.

Lady Justice Hedwig Ong’undi

The recruitment is set to start on June 17 running to the end on August 13. Kenyans are likely to know new faces in the Court of Appeal mid September. Apart from the appealant court, also Environment and Lands, Employment and Labour Relations High Courts will get new judges.
Chief Justice David Maraga who chairs JSC will oversee the recruitment process.
Justice Muchelule who was a member of JSC representing High Court has been replaced by Justice David Macharia with Macharia Njeru representing Law Society of Kenya on JSC. Njeru replaced Tom Ojienda.
