The Orange Democratic Movement ( ODM) leader Raila Odinga’s joke during the Kibra by-election campaign in the name of praising Kamba’s loyalty backfires on him.

On Saturday 3 November, Raila sought the Kamba leader’s support in the Kibra by-election by meeting Kamba governors Alfred Mutua (Machakos), Charity Ngilu (Kitui) and Kivutha Kibwana (Makueni).

Raila during the meeting with Kamba leaders stated that he was assured of the community’s support in the Kibra election in the area perceived to be the ODM party stronghold.

Raila left tongues wagging during the Kibra campaign when he stated in Kiswahili, “Wakamba ni waaminifu kama akina mama. Wakisema wanakupatia wanakupatia (the Kambas are loyal and are like women when they say they will support you, they will keep their word).”

Raila’s comments seemed to have been understood wrongly by a section of Kenyans with many faulting his choice of words in his remarks.

A section of Kamba leaders condemned Raila choice of words by expressing their disappointments.

Part of Mavoko MP Patrick Makau expressing his disappointment in Raila’s comment reads, “I’m shocked by Raila’s insult to the Akamba community and all women. The fact that Kalonzo has agreed to deputize you twice, losing does not qualify you to imagine us as weak.

“We only wanted to win and bring change to this Nation. Now I believe you do not respect the Kamba nation.”

Raila’s comment also disappointed a section of Kenyans who took offence with the comments with one user stating, “This is horrible. It is getting ugly.”

Some netizens termed Raila’s comment as insults to kamba women, and hate speech as well while others were of the opinion that there was nothing worng with his comments.
