An explosive dossier by the medical and dental practitioners’ boards and councils across East Africa led to the shutdown of medical schools in three universities due to quality concerns.
The affected universities are as follows:
- Uzima University:- Students from Uzima will not be eligible within EAC partners’ states. The Kisumu based university which has 300 medical students has been penalized after report revealed that it was performing way below the required standard.
An inspection carried out between March 2 and March 6 by ranked the struggling University at a paltry 49 points out of 100.
The worrying report revealed that Uzima apart from conducting lecturers in incomplete buildings, the university has failed to establish departments for basic sciences, over enrolment and gaps in staffing.
It has since been ordered to distribute its students to other institutions in the country.
- Kenyatta University (KU):- The University which is one of the giant learning institutions in the country has been ordered to suspend admission of new students.
It scored 54 percent in the survey, a proof that it lacked consistency with EAC guidelines on training and quality.
- Kenya Methodist University (KeMU): Some of the issues that attracted its closer are over enrollment, poor staffing ratios in pre-clinical and clinical programs, infrastructure gaps, weaknesses in staffing and lack of accommodation for clinical students next to a hospital.
Luckily for continuing students from both KU and KeMU upon graduation will be eligible for recognition with the EAC partners’ states.
