The Government has warned of impending flash floods during the peak of the long rains season of March, April and May and urged those living in areas prone to floods to move to higher grounds.

They include those living along river Tana who have been urged to move to higher grounds to avert possible loss of lives due to the floods.

Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter said, “With the ongoing heavy rains, the Eastern Hydros specifically the seven forks dam are full to capacity and already spilling.”

Keter further warned those living in Garissa to move to higher ground as the dams are full and more rainfall is expected in Kitui and Meru areas.

Keter was speaking during a joint media briefing bring together Interior CS Fred Matiangi’, Environment CS Keriako Tobiko as well as Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa.

Matiangi’ directed County and Regional Commissioners to work with the National Government Administration Officers infrastructure to ensure they move populations in mudslide-prone areas in Murang’a, Taita Taveta, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Garissa, Tana River and Kitui to safe places.

Wamalwa on other hand said the Government has already responded and sent food and non-food items to support those affected in Elgeyo Marakwet.

He however urged County Government to set aside emergency funds saying with climate change, the Country will continue to experience these disasters.

Tobiko called on Kenyans to take advantage of the rains to plant more trees to avert damage caused by the floods.
