Gilgil MP Martha Wangari says Parliament will audit all the monies donated to control the spread of Covid-19 to ensure the cash isn’t misappropriated.
The Government has set aside billions of shillings and the kitty has been boosted by donations from other Government organizations, private companies as well as individuals.
Wangari says Parliament will not shy away from playing its oversight role in making sure that the funds were well utilized and that the intended parties benefited.
She said that the cash should not be sent to individuals adding that affected persons should instead get food rations from both the National and County Governments.
“We shall audit every penny donated towards the fight against this pandemic as there are fears that some persons might embezzle the funds.” she said.
Wangari further called on the Government to update its data on the number of elderly persons in the Country as the last registration was done three years ago.
“There are some elderly persons who have since died, others who were not factored in during the last registration yet they ought to benefit from the Ksh 10B set aside by the Government but they have been locked out.” she said.
Speaking in Gilgil after attending the sub-county disaster management meeting, Wangari noted that the constituency faced a major food shortage due to the pandemic.
She said flower farm workers, IDPs and youths working in quarries are the most affected in Gilgil saying they need to support.
Wangari said that they were working closely with area MCAs to make sure that those who didn’t benefit when the County distributed food rations will be considered when the National Government rolls out the exercise.
