Former president Mwai Kibaki will from July this year start earning an average of Sh. 2.86 million per month. According to the National Treasury’s budget estimates that are before parliament, the former president’s pension and perks will stand at Sh. 34.43 million in the financial year set to start in July.

A report on the matter that appeared in the Business Daily on Tuesday said that “at Sh. 2.86 million, Kibaki’s average monthly payout is more than double President Uhuru Kenyatta’s official salary of Sh. 1.44 million. It also puts his benefits higher than the salaries and allowances of top chief executives of State-owned firms like KenGen, Kenya-Re and Kenya Power.”

Currently, Kenya’s retired president’s monthly pension is set at 80 percent of the salary that is paid to the sitting president. Former presidents are also entitled to perks such as fuel, house and entertainment allowances.

In 2015, the Treasury budgeted and spent Sh. 250 million to refurbish Kibaki’s office block at Nyari Estate in Nairobi. Mr Kibaki’s office block was bought in late 2013 by the government at Sh. 250 million. Its purchase followed a public outcry after the Treasury had set aside Sh. 700 million to acquire new offices for Kenya’s third president.

Apart from the Nyari office block, Mwai Kibaki has a State-financed Sh. 500 million Mweiga home in Nyeri that is built on a 100-acre piece of land.
