Senators question government’s preparedness in dealing with floods – KBC

The Senate has questioned the government’s preparedness to prevent Kenyans from suffering as a result of vagaries brought about by changes in climate like floods and other disasters.

The lethargic approach by the government whenever these disasters happen has also been criticized by the senators who termed it as a prove of a government that has abdicated its responsibility.

They are wondering how long will Kenyans continue to suffer and die as results of the disasters when this is a perennial challenge that to date the government should have better plans to protect Kenyans having understood  the weather patterns.

Senator are further questioning why, given the predictable cycle of floods, the government has been lax in digging water reservoirs and dams, water which can be used during drought seasons.

Reacting to a statement by Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip, on status of floods and disaster preparedness in the country, senators have in the intervening period called on the government to cushion affected families in the country as is the case with those vulnerable families affected by COVID-19.

The statement comes in the wake of more than two hundred deaths that have recorded in the country as a results of floods.
