Embattled Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru is set to fight for her plum job in the Senate as her impeachment trial kicks off.

The Kirinyaga county Assembly would be the first to present their evidence to the select 11-member committee chaired by Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala.

Lawyers representing the County Assembly would be expected to defend MCAs decision to impeach the first term governor over abuse of office allegations, gross misconduct, and manipulating the public procurement procedures.

The county boss was also accused of illegally conferring a benefit of KSh 10 million to herself for travel allowance.

Waiguru who resigned in 2015 as Devolution CS due massive corruption allegations in the National Youth Service (NYS), is expected to appear before the committee to defend herself on Wednesday, June 24.

Her defence team would be led by husband Kamotho Waiganjo who had submitted voluminous documents contained in 40 cartons to the clerk of the Senate.

Waiguru confirmed the same on her Twitter handle.

“In compliance with the Senate’s request I have today filed my responses to the impeachment motion filed for my removal from office by the Kirinyaga County Assembly. May truth, justice and the rule of law prevail,'” she said in a tweet.
