Police Spokesman Charles Owino faced the wrath of angry Kenyans over his response to the reported rise in police brutality and extra-judicial killings.
In an interview at NTV with Ken Mijungu on Tuesday 2 May, Owino was questioned about particular publicized cases of one Samuel Maina, whose nose was allegedly broken by police for flaunting curfew rules and a homeless man allegedly shot to death in Mathare by police.
Responding to Mijungu’s queries, Owino reiterated that he doesn’t see the reason why Maina would be scared of being victimized by the police after being informed Maina was watching the show and wanted assurances on his safety.
Owino further advised Maina to visit his office to be directed to the Internal Affairs Unit after it was revealed that the officers involved in Maina’s matter allegedly known to him.
“Victimized by who? I don’t like this word police brutality because I’m a policeman and I cannot victimize. Ask him to come and see me tomorrow, I’ll give him officers to take him to my colleague who is the Director of the Internal Affairs Unit, ” Owino stated.
“There is no cause for alarm, there is no need to fear,” he added.
Owino further argued that it was important to be very careful when highlighting issues of alleged offenses by the police as their livelihoods and reputations were on the line.
Owino’s sentiments elicited outrage with Kenyans on social media questioning Owino’s sentiments on the cases which have captured national attention in recent days.
“I think Charles Owino is the one promoting police brutality. He is so arrogant and baseless. How can you say watchmen are the ones killing people,” one Twitter user decried.
