Education CS George Magoha has directed all learning institutions both private and public to refund second and third term fees, to parents who had paid. While speaking to the press on Wednesday, the CS also proposed the parents and the learning institutions can come into an agreement so as to carry the fee forward to next year, when schools reopen.

Magoha on Tuesday postponed the scheduled plans to reopen schools in September as the numbers of Coronavirus cases in the country took a hike. The CS announced all basic learning institutions would be reopened in January 2021 after the virus is well contained.

“Based on the rising trend, we agreed to shelve classes. The country will be severely affected as all other children will lose the year. It shall be impossible to achieve social distancing.

“In consultation with the Ministry of Health, stakeholders agreed that reducing physical numbers in classes will affect learning, schools should only resume if cases reduce consistently for 14 days and social and physical distancing is the most critical factor in ensuring the safety of learners, handwashing and using masks and monitoring temperature will be crucial too,” Magoha announced.

Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) Secretary-General, Akello Misori Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO Nancy Macharia, and KNUT colleague Wilson Sossion also seconded Magoha’s decision to reopen the schools in January next year as it will protect students and parents from the deadly virus.
