447 more people test positive, Kenya’s count rises to 8,975

Health Cabinet Secretary(CS) Mutahi Kagwe has announced 447 more COVID-19 cases in the country.

The new cases raised Kenya’s COVID-19 count to 8,975 from 8,528 recorded on Wednesday, July 8. They were drawn from 3,803 samples.

This is the highest number of positive cases the country had recorded within a single day since March 13 when the disease was first reported in the country.

Speaking in Mombasa county, Kagwe disclosed the ministry had discharged 64 more people increasing the number of recoveries from 2,593 reported on Wednesday to 2,657.

Some four more patients had lost their lives to the disease pushing the death toll to 173.

From a statistical point of view, 138 people at the moment, test positive from every 100,000 sample run in Mombasa while in Nairobi it is 100 for every 100,000 people.

Mombasa has over 1,663 active cases and these numbers are likely to go up. Mombasa is a place everyone in Nairobi and elsewhere has been waiting to visit as soon as cessation of movement has been lifted hopefully this does not indicate a surge in cases,” Kagwe said.

Out of the new patients, 280 were males while 167 were females. The youngest patient, the CS said, was a one-year-old while the eldest was 88.

“We men are more affected by coronavirus; 280 of today’s cases are male while 167 are women. Today’s cases include a one-year-old child. This means we really need to protect infants since we are still reporting positive cases among them

I know ware Africans and we would like to come together and celebrate when a newborn comes. However, for now, let us shelve this. You can send the new mother money if you really need to appreciate them,” the CS urged.
