Solskjaer reveals he contacted Ronaldo before signing Bruno Fernandes

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted he contacted Cristiano Ronaldo before signing Bruno Fernandes.

The 25-year-old midfielder joined the Red Devils in January from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 and became an instant hit for the club.

He has scored eight goals and eight assists in 16 appearances despite moving to Old Trafford mid-way through the 2019-20 season.

Fernandes has also won the Premier League player of the month twice – in February and June while winning the goal of the month once.

His presence in the team alongside a few others has helped the team contend for the European competition qualification spot this season.

Solskjaer admits that just watching the Portugal international is enough to understand his qualities, while United legend Ronaldo also gave Fernandes glowing review which proved key.

“We’ve got the chief scouts who do all the scouting, we’ve got the analysts who analyse and break everything down to the minutest detail. But you can see that with your eye really what talent and quality you’ve got,” Solskjaer told the High-Performance Podcast.

“Then you speak to teammates, who maybe play with them in the national team. So obviously Cristiano was an easy goal for me. I managed to get through Patrice Evra, I managed to get hold of Cristiano and his recommendation obviously stands him [Fernandes] in good stead,” he added.

After his superb showing since his arrival in January, Solskjaer is impressed with the way the midfielder has embraced the culture at Old Trafford.
