Kenyan women are becoming more cautious and concerned about their security when they move around. Women only cabs is taking a trend in the city. These are taxis owned and operated by women, and they specifically serve female customers. One of such is An Nisa Taxi, an all-female cab service delineated for the needs of women around Nairobi and other parts of the country.

”We only employ female drivers. The idea behind An Nisa Taxis is to provide a safe space for women when they are going around…with their work or if they are on their own or if they are with their kids,” Mehnaz Sarwa, founder of Anisa Taxi says.

Since 2014, the number of female cab drivers have more than doubled in the country. The male dominated industry has experienced this surge in the number of women due to a feeling of vulnerability by female passengers, when alone.

”A woman is more vulnerable when she is alone not with the male, with a husband or a brother…Unfortunately for a man when they enter a taxi, they do not have to think about these stuff. I have had ladies tell me they check if the child lock is on…or they are planning an escape route in case something goes wrong,” Sarwa adds.

Being a Muslim woman, Sarwa says there has also been stigma around female drivers, not only from her background but also in today’s society. This, she explains has been one of the challenges she faces as a woman and most specifically a female business owner.
