Malindi constituency seat held by Aisha Jumwa is up for grabs after Jumwa declared she will go for Kilifi governor in the coming general elections to succeed Amason Kingi. Malindi has five electoral wards namely Jilore, Kakuyuni , Ganda, Shella and Malindi Town with a total voting strength of 87,210 as at 2017 general elections.
Top contenders include former banker Philip Charo who vied for the seat on a Jubilee ticket in 2017 and came second. Most Malindi voters still wonder what happened since they claim to have voted for him. Word on the ground has it that he will vie again but this time on an ODM ticket after he is reported to have abandoned Jubilee on public demand. Others said to be sharpening daggers are former MP Willy Mtengo and newcomers Karisa Mlewa, Raphael Diwani the principal Makueni Boys High School and one Taura.
The Malindi 2022 race is still wide open as area MP has reportedly told her supporters she is still shopping for a suitable successor capable of battling Charo. It was not immediately clear if businesswoman and former KAA deputy MD Naomi Cidi who is associated with Summit Party of Kenya is in the Malindi race. She is among Coast elites at the forefront championing for the region’s unity and development.
